Events to Mark Cover the Uninsured Week
More than forty-seven million Americans, including more than 51,000 in Caddo Parish, have no health care insurance. Each year, 18,000 to 22,000 Americans die because of a lack of health coverage. The week of March 22-28, 2009, CHRISTUS Schumpert Health System will join organizations across the United States in observing Cover the Uninsured Week. During this time, CHRISTUS Schumpert will help uninsured or underinsured residents enroll in public coverage programs such as Medicaid and the Louisiana Children’s Health Insurance Program (LaCHIP), as well as locate other community health-related resources.
March Activities will begin with a Prayer Service, “Caring for the Uninsured,” Monday, 23, at 10:00 a.m. at Martin Luther King Health Center, 1233 Sprague Street. The MLK Clinic has been providing health care free of charge for more than 20 years and is one of multiple resources available to the uninsured. CHRISTUS Schumpert Vice President for Mission Integration, Bonnie Burnett and Sr. Sharon Rambin will lead the service.
Throughout the week, the local LaCHIP Marketing Coordinator, Michelle White LaFitte, will hold registration events throughout Shreveport and Bossier. Registration dates, times and locations are:
Ø Tuesday, March 24, 11 a.m.-2p.m., CHRISTUS Schumpert St. Mary Place Atrium
Ø Friday, March 27, 6 p.m – 8 p.m., 7th Annual Light of Hope, Louisiana Boardwalk
On Wednesday morning at 9 a.m., health system representatives will join with staff of
Shreveport Bossier Community Renewal and Department of Health and Hospitals for a prayer walk through the Community Renewal Friendship neighborhoods.
Cover the Uninsured Week is a nonpartisan, nationwide effort to urge U.S. leaders to make health coverage for Americans their top priority and is now in its seventh year.
